U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency releases preview of ESTA online travel authorization system for Visa Waiver program travelers July 23, 2008 The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency today released a preview of its online Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Beginning January 12, 2009, travelers visiting the United States under the Visa Waiver program will be required to obtain advance authorization to travel by using the online ESTA system. The ESTA system will be made available online in English for use by Visa Waiver travelers on a voluntary basis beginning August 1, 2008. Expansion of the system to include additional languages will occur between August and January. The Visa Waiver program enables visitors from eligible countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without a visa.
